The Shining: Here's Johnny Scene

Camera Angles/ Shots

· Zoom in: door and face to show reactions and emotions of both Wendy and Jack, adding tension as Jack seems to be uncontrollable and Wendy seems to be vulnerable and defenceless because she seems to be crying and shrieking. Wendy seems to be vulnerable because she has a weapon in her hand and does not use it. Later on Wendy decides to protect herself and when she does harm Jack she causes very little damage to him. This suggests that she still loves him which can be seen as frightening.

· Match action shot: Jack’s hand on the door handle showing him getting stabbed and blood squirting everywhere. This increases the tension and horror as there is gore and violence.

· Close up: able to see his clothes which adds to terror as he seems to keep himself clean and looks as if he is a profession

· Tracking shot: Wendy grabbing the knife out of the sink and running behind the door. This adds to horror because Wendy is seeking for a hiding place as she is scared that Jack would see her.

· Medium long shot: when Jack is breaking the door, showing the violence and terror

Sound

· Dialogue: showing tension between the two couples as they both seem to be arguing, suggesting that they are not committed to their marriage.

· Wind howling: showing that the window is open, giving a threatening and disturbing atmosphere

· Eerie music getting louder: showing that something scary is going to happen

· Screaming: increase in tension as the audience would constantly think about Wendy’s survival

· Jack breaking door with axe: leading to tension watching this violent and aggressive scene

Editing

· Cut: from Jack to Wendy

· Cut: from Wendy to the door

· Cut: from Jack trying to open door handle

· Cut: to show Jack’s facial expression and his reaction

· Slow editing but later becomes fast editing

Mise En Scene

· Jack: scruffy looking, beard grown, pointy eyebrows showing his sinister and evil personality

· Wendy: has a blue night robe: suggesting that she has just woken up and is probably imagining that Jack is attacking her. I think this because she doesn’t seem to defend herself in any way when Jack has his face between the broken also noting that Wendy is armed.

· White shower room: emphasising the coldness as Wendy seems to shaking and looks pale

· Bedroom seems to be messy: showing the tension between Wendy and Danny as they had to leave the room in a hurry before Jack arrived.
