The Shining: Hall Way Scene

Camera Angles/ Shots

· Z Zoom in: close up on face showing fear and emotions

· Long mid shot: audience is able to see the whole hallway

· C Long mid shot: bringing the audience closer

Sound

· Sinister: evil

· Tricycle: hearing the wheels, almost sounds as if the wheels are getting dragged, adds tension

· Dialogue

· Irregular and jarring “music”/sound (unpredictable)

· Echoing voices: emphasising the 2 girls are dead and hostile

Editing

· Continuity editing

· Cut: to change of scene to corridor, unpredictable on what is going to happen leading to tension

· Cut: close up on Danny’s face showing that he is scared

· Cut: bloodshed seeing a flash premonition, this is scary because a little boy is seeing images that are too violent for his youth again leading to distraught and trouble

· Cut: girls getting closer suggesting that he is not imaging but is real

· Slow editing but later become fast editing: adding to tension and horror, unpredictable on what is going to happen

Mise En Scene

· Hallway: long, empty, eerie, narrow: leading to tension as audience is thinking that something is going to happen

· Costume: boy wearing red top signifying blood and murder

· 2 girls: standing stiff, hostile, emotionless (expression)

· Unexpected turns and corners like a maze: increase in tension as the audience would think that Danny is lost as he looks vulnerable

· Riding a tricycle: emphasising his youth and innocence

· The camera makes him look younger than those 2 girls: suggesting 2 girls have power over him (empowerment)

· Tricycle: adds to the feeling that Danny is more likely to get trapped, unable to run as fast
