The Shining: Hall Way Scene

Camera Angles/ Shots

· Tracking shot: emphasising that he is not alone and being followed around, unpredictable hallways, suggesting it’s a maze

· Z Zoom in: close up on face showing fear and emotions

· Long mid shot: audience is able to see the whole hallway

· C Long mid shot: bringing the audience closer

Sound

· Sinister: evil

· Tricycle: hearing the wheels, almost sounds as if the wheels are getting dragged, adds tension

· Dialogue

· Irregular and jarring “music”/sound (unpredictable)

· Echoing voices: emphasising the 2 girls are dead and hostile

Editing

· Continuity editing

· Cut: to change of scene to corridor, unpredictable on what is going to happen leading to tension

· Cut: close up on Danny’s face showing that he is scared

· Cut: bloodshed seeing a flash premonition, this is scary because a little boy is seeing images that are too violent for his youth again leading to distraught and trouble

· Cut: girls getting closer suggesting that he is not imaging but is real

· Slow editing but later become fast editing: adding to tension and horror, unpredictable on what is going to happen

Mise En Scene

· Hallway: long, empty, eerie, narrow: leading to tension as audience is thinking that something is going to happen

· Costume: boy wearing red top signifying blood and murder

· 2 girls: standing stiff, hostile, emotionless (expression)

· Unexpected turns and corners like a maze: increase in tension as the audience would think that Danny is lost as he looks vulnerable

· Riding a tricycle: emphasising his youth and innocence

· The camera makes him look younger than those 2 girls: suggesting 2 girls have power over him (empowerment)

· Tricycle: adds to the feeling that Danny is more likely to get trapped, unable to run as fast

The Shining: Bathroom Scene

Camera Angles/ Shots

· Medium long shot: showing their whole body. This is creepy because it seems to me that there is a party in the Hotel. I can tell this because Grady seems to dress in an organised fashion, whereas Jack is dressed ordinary. This leads to tension because this tells us that Jack is imagining and hallucinating. This is terrifying because this shows that Jack is mentally ill which is why he later becomes more aggressive and threatening.

· Medium shot: In this shot Grady is cleaning Jacks clothes which shows a sense of mystery

· Zoom in: to Grady’s face and then Jacks, showing facial expressions

· Close up: to both faces

· Tracking shot: Wendy walking back and forth, tension arising again as she seems worried and agitated

Sound

· Dialogue

· Peaceful music in the background: eerie and disturbing as Jack is talking to a ghost

· Hearing the wind howling

· Sinister music: eerie and creepy

Editing

· Constant Cut: to Jack and Grady, showing facial expression and different emotions

· Cut: to Wendy in the bedroom

Mise En Scene

· Shower room: adding tension because it is small leading to the feeling of claustrophobia

· Red and white patterns around the toilet, suggesting murder and blood

· Mirrors around the toilet: increase tension because Grady’s back is not reflected on the mirror suggesting that he is a ghost and that Jack is imaging stuff

· Bedroom: Wendy seems to be unstable as she is crying and holding a cigarette in one hand, also suggesting that she is trying to reduce her stress

The Shining: Here's Johnny Scene

Camera Angles/ Shots

· Zoom in: door and face to show reactions and emotions of both Wendy and Jack, adding tension as Jack seems to be uncontrollable and Wendy seems to be vulnerable and defenceless because she seems to be crying and shrieking. Wendy seems to be vulnerable because she has a weapon in her hand and does not use it. Later on Wendy decides to protect herself and when she does harm Jack she causes very little damage to him. This suggests that she still loves him which can be seen as frightening.

· Match action shot: Jack’s hand on the door handle showing him getting stabbed and blood squirting everywhere. This increases the tension and horror as there is gore and violence.

· Close up: able to see his clothes which adds to terror as he seems to keep himself clean and looks as if he is a profession

· Tracking shot: Wendy grabbing the knife out of the sink and running behind the door. This adds to horror because Wendy is seeking for a hiding place as she is scared that Jack would see her.

· Medium long shot: when Jack is breaking the door, showing the violence and terror

Sound

· Dialogue: showing tension between the two couples as they both seem to be arguing, suggesting that they are not committed to their marriage.

· Wind howling: showing that the window is open, giving a threatening and disturbing atmosphere

· Eerie music getting louder: showing that something scary is going to happen

· Screaming: increase in tension as the audience would constantly think about Wendy’s survival

· Jack breaking door with axe: leading to tension watching this violent and aggressive scene

Editing

· Cut: from Jack to Wendy

· Cut: from Wendy to the door

· Cut: from Jack trying to open door handle

· Cut: to show Jack’s facial expression and his reaction

· Slow editing but later becomes fast editing

Mise En Scene

· Jack: scruffy looking, beard grown, pointy eyebrows showing his sinister and evil personality

· Wendy: has a blue night robe: suggesting that she has just woken up and is probably imagining that Jack is attacking her. I think this because she doesn’t seem to defend herself in any way when Jack has his face between the broken also noting that Wendy is armed.

· White shower room: emphasising the coldness as Wendy seems to shaking and looks pale

· Bedroom seems to be messy: showing the tension between Wendy and Danny as they had to leave the room in a hurry before Jack arrived.

The Shining: Opening Scene

Camera Angles/Shots

· Camera tilts sideways and zooms in: suggesting someone is closing in

· Aerial views (birds eye): as if there is a vulture watching and not leaving the audience alone (predator)and playing with their feelings and emotions (inconsistent)

· Tracking shot: as if someone is following the audience (prey, this shot also suggests that someone is following the car. However, I have noticed that the camera does not always follows the care but sometimes the car is not shown in some scene suggesting that the camera has over taken the car. This suggests that the film has an unstable effect.

· Establishing shot: showing Hotel from an aerial shot, this suggests that the Hotel is isolated and far away from civilisation

Sound

· Sombre and imposing music: scary and threatening

· Faint sound of women screaming, as if this is a pre warning leading to the phase horror

· String instrument and chanting, suggesting that something bad may occur with the repetition

Editing

· Slow paced editing: long journey, sense of normal atmosphere, calm but expected. This often leaves the audience wondering when the journey will end and what will happen

· Fade cut: transition happens when camera begins to follow the car, introducing the car and showing different landscapes, also suggesting the different moods the character goes in throughout this movie

· Cut: showing different changes in the landscape throughout the journey

· Continuity editing

Mise En Scene

Landscape:

· Sinister: quiet, dangerous, high mountains, small roads, only one car on the road suggesting that something might happen as they are alone

· Miles away from civilisation

· Wild unpredictable sense of going in to the unknown

· Middle of nowhere showing they are trapped

· Natural scene (more water than land)

· Peaceful scene (traditional) land reflecting on water, turning to sinister

Weather:

· Landscape changes from lush, green to snowy and barren (grass unable to grow)

· Suggesting that they travelled for a long time (distance)

· Change of mood from happiness to growth to hostility (being hostile to someone, not smiling, stony manner) and coldness
